Painting Detail: 30 x 36inch on gallery wrapped canvas. Sides are finished. Wired and ready to hang. available in online shop here This painting is based off of a plein air piece I did one evening while my husband Dean was fishing at Stony Creek, Branford, CT. A favorite place for us to just hang out and relax after a long week of work. Only minutes from our home, we often take an afternoon walk along the trolley trail or just grab a bit to eat and sit down by the water to watch the sunset. It was busy this evening, we could smell the fresh baked pizza pies from the Market across the street. Folks were filling up the grassy area with lawn chairs and coolers. Chatting away and enjoying each others company. The children played in the sandy beach and splashed in the water. I tucked myself away on the other side of the gazebo, down near the water in a small sand bar. As the tide shifted from high to low more rock formations appeared. As the sun dropped lower in the sky the bright pinks, oranges and yellows peaked through the soft hazy purple clouds. I could see in the distance the lights of the coastal homes flicker on as the evening progressed. It's early September now and the days are getting shorter as the fall season approaches. Sunrise is a little later each day and sunset a little earlier. But no matter how long or short the day is, taking the time to enjoy a gorgeous sunset brings a sense of tranquility and peace to my soul. When I asked my husband, what should I name this piece? He quickly replied Tides are Changing. Hmmm... I like that! Now that was easy. That's not always the case though, naming a painting can be very challenging. Trying to condense all those thoughts and ideas of what this painting is to convey in just a few words can be tricky. For my husband, he likes to think more literally. That was exactly what was happening when I painted the plein air study. But for me the title Tides are Changing has an even greater meaning. This year has been a year like no other. Who could have ever predicted all that has happened in our Country and around the world in 2020. Without getting into the details and rabbit trailing to the negative, I want to focus on the beautiful things that can transpire from something so damaging. How we as humans can go through such distressing times where things are turned upside down and we're in the middle of a storm yet we make it, one day at time, one foot in front of the other. Where we can look back and say that's behind us and instead we fix our eyes on what's ahead. We can feel the shift in our spirit, that as the day closes we can say, we've made it through another day. And as each one of these days fills the calendar pages our confidence is found not in anything we have done but when we put it in the hands of our Creator. The one who loves us. Who cares about us and who is there for us. All we have to do is search for Him and he is there. We ride on the wave of hope knowing that there is God of Universe who is for us and not against us. Yes the tides are changing and it's for the good. Faith over fear. ![]() This painting and two others will be featured in an upcoming show at Friends and Company Restaurant in Madison CT. Sept 9 - October 19, 2020.

Art Show Details: Title: Madison Art Society presents: Capturing Connecticut's Beauty - En Plein Air Show 2020 Location: Friends and Company Restaurant, 11 Boston Post Road, Madison, CT Dates: September 9, 2020 to October 19, 2020 Reception/Paint Out: Sunday September 13, 2020 3-6pm rain date: Sunday September 20 2020, 3-6pm Within Madison Art Society’s 250 member art organization, a small group of painters gather each week from the months of May to October to paint together out on location. The group will paint at various locations from private farms to rocky beaches, town greens, land trust properties, marinas and gardens, expressing their love for the great outdoors through the creation of art. This type of painting is known as “En Plein Air” which is the french term for “out in the open”. Although there is no definite date when plein air painting began, it was the French Impressionist who redefined plein air painting as a finished work of art. It was also the invention of the portable paint tube that made it possible for artists to venture outside the studio and transport their materials anywhere they choose. Today, the Plein Air Movement has resurged and over the past 10 years has grown significantly to offer numerous national and international events, conferences and invitationals. Due to the challenges of 2020’s health crisis, many of the large events were either canceled or offered virtual alternatives with plans to resume in 2021. As for the MAS plein air painters, this faithful group of artists never questioned whether they would stop meeting. Linda Marino, the paint out coordinator, was asked to posted the painting schedule in late April. This year the necessary safety guidelines were set in place and locations were carefully chosen to offer painters access to beautiful vistas without compromising anyone’s safety. The benefits of painting en plein air and with a group of painters is numerous. Experiencing nature and all of it’s beauty, heightens the senses and sharpens artistic skills. The group offers friendships, breaks the isolation cycle and painting companions for safety. With over 40 different locations the group chooses to paint at, one can experience the magnificent natural beauty of the Connecticut shore and land in a way no other experience can compare. The history of American Impressionism was founded right here in Connecticut and a favorite place for the MAS plein air painters enjoy painting is the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, CT. Quite possibly the MAS painters could be walking in the footsteps of the American Impressionist Masters from the early decades of the twentieth century. Masters such as Childe Hassam, John Henry Twachtman, Willard Metcalf and Matilda Browne. At times the group swells up to about 15 artists and other times it may be just 2 or 3 painters. Painters range from beginners to professional artists. The group is always welcoming new painters to join the Madison Art Society and paint along with group each Wednesday morning. The show features paintings by MAS Artists, Eileen Eder of Guilford, Betsy Evarts of Guilford, Hillary Griffin of Madison, Paul Loescher of Clinton, Linda Marino of Branford, Jeanne Obrien of Deep River, Beverly Schirmeier of Westbrook and Patricia Seekamp of Guilford. Capturing Connecticut’s Beauty - En Plein Air Show 2020 will be held at Friend’s and Company Restaurant, 11 Boston Post Road, Madison, CT. The show dates are from Wednesday, September 9 to Monday, October 19, 2020. Friend’s and Company owners Gregory Benson and Brian Gondek are strong supporters of the arts. Since 2003, they have offered their restaurant as a gallery space for local artists. The Show Reception, Sunday Sept 13 from 3-6pm ( rain date: Sun. Sept. 20) will be held outside on the grounds of the establishment along the East River bank where all 8 painters will set up their easels and paint during the hours of 3-6pm.
